Clinical Support For Surgery

DESCRIPTION
Clinical Support for Surgery is a specialty nutritional supplement program that is designed to provide patients with essential nutrients to support healing after a surgical procedure. The two-part (AM & PM) formulation is unique because it excludes nutrients that may have an adverse effect on surgery and healing. For example, the formulation does not contain vitamin E because this fat-soluble vitamin may cause problems with bleeding during surgery and slow wound healing post-operatively.

BENEFITS
VitaMedica's Clinical Support for Surgery offers a number of benefits including:

AM/PM Dosing for Optimal Nutrition
Clinical Support for Surgery has been carefully formulated using Chronotherapy to provide the right nutrients at the right time of day. Chronotherapy is treatment based on the use of time and the understanding that our bodies work in cycles. The morning formulation includes the entire B-complex to promote energy and rapid recovery, and the evening formulation includes minerals to promote rest and relaxation. Divided dosing with an AM/PM format also ensures optimal absorption of the water-soluble vitamins.

Antioxidant Protection for Surgery
Surgery and the stress that accompanies it, cause a significant increase in cellular oxidation. Excess free-radicals can have many harmful effects. Antioxidants help to prevent or minimize oxidative damage to cells. Clinical Support for Surgery includes several beneficial antioxidants such as vitamin A, vitamin C, selenium and bioflavonoids to prevent free-radical formation and minimize damage to cells during the perioperative period.

Zinc for Immune Enhancement
Anesthesia, stress and pain can substantially modify immune system function with potential impact on postoperative recovery. Clinical Support for Surgery includes 21 mg. of zinc, a mineral that helps facilitate chemical reactions necessary for proper functioning of the immune system.

Vitamin C and Vitamin A for Wound Healing
Building new tissue is an orderly progression of events that is dependent upon the availability of essential nutrients. Because of the marginal American diet, many patients are lacking in these important wound-healing nutrients. Clinical Support for Surgery provides 750 mg. of vitamin C, 10,000 IUs of vitamin A and 15,000 IUs of Beta carotene - amounts which are significantly higher than the average multi-vitamin - to support development of collagen and promote proper wound epithelialization.

INDICATIONS
Clinical Support for Surgery contains specific nutrients that are especially important for healing and building the immune system.  As a result, the product is particularly beneficial for patients undergoing more extensive surgical procedures such as face lift, breast reduction and reconstruction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and liposuction.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Nutritional supplements have an excellent safety track record. However, certain individuals should seek the advice of their doctor before beginning any nutritional supplement program, particularly diabetics and pregnant or lactating women. CLINICAL SUPPORT FOR SURGERY contains Vitamin A.  If you are presently taking Accutane® (isotretinoin) for the treatment of acne, please refrain from taking CLINICAL SUPPORT FOR SURGERY until the end of the treatment cycle. This product also contains niacin, which may cause temporary redness of the skin and flushing.

DIRECTIONS
Begin taking Clinical Support for Surgery up to two weeks prior to a scheduled surgery and for at least two weeks post-operatively.  As a dietary supplement, take 1-3 tablets of AM Clinical Support for Surgery with breakfast or lunch. Take 1-3 tablets of PM Clinical Support for Surgery with dinner or before bedtime.  Each individual is unique and your requirements may vary.

About 10% of patients experience the so-called "niacin flush" with high-potency vitamins.  This involves a temporary reddening of the skin that lasts 10-15 minutes.  It is a normal response and is harmless.  Usually it will disappear after one or two days of taking the vitamins.

To decrease the chances of the niacin-flush occurring, we recommend building up slowly to the full dose of Clinical Support for Surgery. When starting the supplement, simply reduce the dose to one tablet for 1-2 days, then two tablets for 1-2 days, and so forth.  This approach will also help to prevent the uneasy sensation that occurs in some people's stomach after taking vitamins.

Additional vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements should not be taken during the peri-operative period.  In particular, supplements containing the following compounds should be discontinued two weeks prior to, and for up to two weeks after surgery:  Bilberry, cayenne, dong quai, echinacea, feverfew, fish oil caps, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hawthorne, kava kava, licorice root, ma huang (ephedra), melatonin, red clover, St. John's wort, valerian, vitamin E and yohimbe.  More about supplements to exclude for surgery...
