Glucosamine Sulfate

DESCRIPTION
Glucosamine Sulfate is a naturally occurring compound known as an amino sugar. Amino sugars are key constituents of larger compounds called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and glycoproteins, which enable cells in tissues to hold together. They are necessary for the construction and maintenance of virtually all connective tissues and lubricating fluids in the body - tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bone matrix, skin, joint fluid, intestinal lining, and mucous membranes.

Normally we generate sufficient amounts of glucosamine in our bodies to form the various compounds needed to generate connective tissue and healthy cartilage. But gradually with aging, the rate at which our body produces glucosamine begins to gradually change. This loss can also be accelerated by increased athletic activity, injuries, inflammatory disorders, and other chronic degeneration. In such situations our bodies may not be able to keep up with the demand for glucosamine, leading to a decrease in the amount of GAGs produced. This can lead to a decrease in the amount of protective lubricating substances such as synovial fluid, which cushions our joints, and protects them from damage. In essence, more glucosamine is needed, but less is produced.

For these reasons, researchers began to look for compounds that could to increase the production GAGs in order to protect cartilage and other connective tissues. In multiple studies glucosamine sulfate has been shown to be such a so-called, chondro-protective compound. These studies showed that oral glucosamine can be easily absorbed and lead to the stimulation of healthy new cartilage and other protective molecules. The studies also showed that oral glucosamine carried this benefit without the toxicity, contraindications, or other harmful side effects of many prescription medications, e.g. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Importantly, glucosamine is a slow acting supplement that may take a month or more to show any effect. The dosage in most studies on glucosamine was 1,500 mg of per day, and it must be taken consistently to maintain its effect. There do not appear to be any major side effects other than mild gastrointestinal upset in some individuals. Those with diabetes should consult with their physician and inform them of the use of glucosamine sulfate. Persons allergic to shellfish should avoid glucosamine and because of a lack of data, pregnant or nursing individuals should also avoid glucosamine. Overall, glucosamine is very well tolerated and has a long history of safety in many different countries around the world.

VitaMedica produces a pharmaceutical-grade Glucosamine Sulfate, provided in easy-to-swallow 750 mg capsules. Our manufacturing facilities exceed the current recommendations for GMP (good manufacturing practices) compliance. The recommended dosage for VitaMedica's Glucosamine Sulfate is two capsules daily, which may be taken together or as one capsule twice a day.

BENEFITS
VitaMedica's Glucosamine Sulfate offers a number of benefits including:

A Key Building Block
Glucosamine Sulfate stimulates the manufacture of substances necessary for proper joint function. Glucosamine Sulfate also helps bind water in the cartilage, providing greater shock absorption.

Helps Repair Joints
Glucosamine Sulfate is responsible for stimulating joint repair because it can stimulate new cartilage production.

Easy-to-Use
Formulated in a 750 mg dose, requiring just two easy-to-swallow capsules per day.

Natural & Safe
Glucosamine Sulfate is a natural compound, so it doesn't produce the negative side effects associated with NSAIDs. As a result, the supplement is well tolerated by most individuals.

Available through Health Care Professionals
VitaMedica's Glucosamine Sulfate is only available through healthcare professionals. This ensures that you get a high quality product and the medical support you need - all in one convenient location.

INDICATIONS
This product is intended for individuals with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. The product can be used in conjunction with other procedures, products and guidelines that the doctor recommends.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Glucosamine sulfate has an excellent safety track record . However, certain individuals should seek the advice of their doctor before beginning any nutritional supplement program particularly diabetics, pregnant or lactating women.

Diabetics - Even though glucosamine sulfate is comprised of a sugar molecule, diabetics can typically take the supplement without experiencing any adverse effects. Please check with your doctor before beginning a nutritional supplement program.

Allergies to Sulfites - If you are allergic to sulfites, you can take glucosamine sulfate. Sulfites are used as a preservative in some foods and can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals (e.g., dried apricots are preserved with sulfites). Sulfur is a natural, organic compound that is an essential element used by the body. Sulfate is a form of this organic sulfur and is safe, and readily used by the body.

Allergies to Shellfish - If you are allergic to shellfish, it is possible that you can take a glucosamine sulfate supplement. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low because shellfish allergies are caused by proteins in the shellfish – and glucosamine comes from chitin, a substance in the shells (lobster, shrimp and crab). Please check with your doctor before beginning a nutritional supplement program.

DIRECTIONS
As a dietary supplement, take two capsules of Glucosamine Sulfate with food, at any time of the day. Since glucosamine sulfate is designed to help maintain healthy joint function and is safe to use, it is advisable to continue its use over the long-term. Individuals taking diuretics may need to increase the dosage (20 milligrams per kilogram body weight daily).
