What is homeopathy and how does it work?
The literal interpretation of homeopathy is “like treating like”. The guiding principle behind homeopathy is that our bodies have natural defense mechanisms to aid in healing. This is often reflected as symptoms. While prescription medications tend to suppress symptoms, homeopathic medications try to elicit them. This approach helps to heal the body faster and is intended to stimulate a person’s overall resistance to infection.

Although homeopathy is widely available and prescribed in Europe, it has only become popular in the U.S. over the past decade or so. For years, facial plastic and aesthetic plastic surgeons have routinely prescribed homeopathic Arnica Montana for their patients as a bruise treatment following surgery. Nowadays, even conventional physicians like Dr. Oz - “America’s Doctor” - recommend Arnica Montana for their patients.

What causes bruising, swelling & pain?
Whether you bang your arm into a wall, twist your ankle or undergo facial plastic surgery, tiny capillaries in the affected area rupture. Blood, which escapes into the surrounding tissue, shows up on the surface of the skin in shades of purple, red and blue and is referred to as ecchymosis or a bruise. As the blood is reabsorbed and the area heals, the discoloration changes to a greenish-yellow hue.

This type of bruising should not be confused with senile purpura, the kind that affects the elderly. As we age, our skin becomes thinner, making us more susceptible to getting bruises from even minor contact. This type of bruising often shows up in the forearms and backs of the hands and can often takes months to heal in an elderly person.

Swelling and inflammation is the result of injury or surgery that causes an excessive amount of blood to stretch the walls of the capillaries. Fluid and white blood cells escape from the capillaries into the spaces between cells in the surrounding area. The swelling that results causes stretching of the tissues and presses on the nerve endings causing pain and adding to the stiffness that may follow.

What medications & supplements promote bleeding & bruising?
Some medications promote bruising because they affect blood clotting. Examples include Coumadin® (warfarin) and other blood thinners; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs (e.g., Advil®); aspirin and cortisone medications like prednisone.

A number of supplements like ginkgo, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E and fish oil, should be discontinued around surgery as they can promote bleeding. Even if you’ve scheduled an injectable or filler procedure (e.g., Restylane®, Juvederm®, BOTOX®), these supplements should be discontinued at least a week before your procedure as they can promote bleeding and therefore bruising. In doing so, you eliminate the need for a bruise treatment. To be safe, download our list of Supplements to Discontinue.

What is Arnica Montana and how does it work as a bruise treatment?
Arnica Montana is also referred to as Leopard’s Bane or the Mountain Daisy. The plant grows primarily in the mountainous regions of Eastern Europe. As a bruise treatment, it is believed that Arnica Montana increases the flow of blood through the affected capillaries causing escaped fluids to be absorbed. The absorption of the fluids makes black and blue marks go away faster and reduces the swelling, relieving the pressure on nerve endings. This in turn, relieves the pain and stiffness. Arnica Montana also stimulates white blood cells, which then help disperse material trapped in bruised tissue, muscles and joints.

How are homeopathic medicines regulated?
Homeopathic preparations are considered medications under federal law and fall under the same regulations as over-the-counter drugs. Every homeopathic product bears a National Drug Code or NDC number ensuring the consumer that the product has been produced in accordance with the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States or HPUS. HPUS, which has been in continuous publication since 1897, ensures that the drug product conforms to legal standards of strength, quality, purity and packaging. As a bruise treatment, homeopathic Arnica Montana is very effective and has an excellent safety track record.

How is homeopathic efficacy measured?
With herbs, vitamins and most drugs, dosage is referred to as the quantity of an active ingredient (e.g., milligrams). In contrast, with homeopathic medicines, dosage is referred to as dilutions. Homeopathic medicines start with a natural substance (e.g. a plant like Arnica Montana) which is then diluted and succussed (shaken). Diluting negates any problems with substances that may be harmful in their raw state whereas succussion enhances the healing properties of the substance.

The potency strength is shown using a Roman numeral along with a number that indicates the repetitions of dilutions and succussing (e.g., 30X). A decimal designation or “X” potency is based on the ratio of 1 part substance to 10 parts dilution. The number of the potency indicates the number of dilutions that have been made. Claiming that a homeopathic remedy is more effective because is contains a certain number of milligrams per dose is inconsistent with the practice of how homeopathic products are manufactured and labeled under the law.

How is homeopathic potency determined?
For local symptoms, such as an insect bite or sore throat, lower potencies are used (3X, 6X, 12X). For more general symptoms, such as fever, aches and pains, medium potencies are recommended (12X, 30X). In terms of frequency of dosing, lower potencies are taken most frequently – about every 4 hours; medium potencies from 1-3 times a day. For facial bruising, a 30X potency of homeopathic Arnica Montana, taken three times a day, represents an ideal natural bruise treatment.

What homeopathic product form is best?
Both tablets and pellets have been used successfully by homeopaths for over a century. Some practitioners prefer pellets because they were the first form used. Others prefer tablets because they are composed of potentized medicine throughout while pellets have liquid medicine added to them. While both are equally efficacious as a bruise treatment, tablets dissolve faster than pellets.

What is the best delivery method for homeopathic medicines?
Central to homeopathy is that the preparations should be delivered sublingually or through the mouth. The medication is placed under the tongue and held there for a minute or two so the medication may pass through the mucous membranes and into the tiny blood vessels lining the area. In this manner, the medication enters the bloodstream directly, without being subjected to first-pass metabolism in the stomach.

What should I look for in homeopathic medications?
Unlike conventional medications, homeopathic remedies do not use chemical or synthetic substances. As a natural bruise treatment, a homoeopathic remedy should not contain any dyes or colorants.
