Health Benefits

VitaMedica’s Immune Defense is formulated with an eight-mushroom blend optimized for their beta-glucan content, plus astragalus root extract to support a healthy immune system response.

Astragalus has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The beneficial effects of the plant are attributed to its high polysaccharide content and other phytonutrients which have immune-supporting and free-radical scavenging effects.

Immune Defense is part of our Immune Support product line. These supplements are designed to support healthy immune system function. To learn more, visit the Immune Support Products page.

1. What ingredients are formulated in Immune Defense?

The supplement is formulated with an eight-mushroom blend that includes Turkey Tail, Sun Mushroom, Maitake, Cordyceps, Meshima, Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Shitake.  In addition to fungi, the formulation contains the botanical astragalus root extract.

2. Why were these ingredients selected for the formula?

The eight mushroom species selected were based on their high beta-glucan content, a plant constituent associated with the immune-supportive properties of the fungal plants.  Astragalus was selected based on the plant’s high polysaccharide content.

3. What are the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms?

The bioactive compounds in medicinal mushrooms are associated with a number of health benefits including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-viral, hepatoprotective (liver protecting) and immunomodulating effects. One of the best ways of obtaining the health benefits of mushrooms is by eating them.  Try our Mushroom Lover’s Soup.

4. What are beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans are water-soluble polysaccharides (a type of carbohydrate) that are found in the cell walls of certain pathogenic bacteria and fungi.  Beta-glucans have been long respected and scientifically studied for their immune-modulating constituents of medicinal mushrooms.

Beta-glucans are found in significant amounts in mushrooms (70%) and are not digested by enzymes in the digestive tract.  Instead, these compounds are absorbed by cells of the small intestine where they support mucosal immunity in the digestive tract and systemic immunity.

As a prebiotic, beta-glucans can positively influence the gut bacteria, improving protection against pathogens.

5. What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are herbs/botanicals that train your body to counteract different types of stressors (physical, chemical or biological).  Adaptogens have restorative properties to help the body adapt to stress.  Two well known immune health adaptogens include the fungi reishi and Cordyceps.

6. What other compounds do medicinal mushrooms contain?

Medicinal mushrooms contain ergosterol, the most abundant plant sterol in mushrooms. Ergosterol is similar to cholesterol and is a precursor molecule to vitamin D2.  Like other plants, mushrooms contain phytonutrients (triterpenes) which possess strong antioxidant effects.

7. What other nutrients are found in mushrooms?

Mushrooms contain many nutrients including fiber, protein (from 16-37 percent), selenium, potassium and the B-vitamins.  Some mushrooms like Monterey naturally contain a high level of vitamin D.  According to the Environmental Working Group, mushrooms are among the Top 15 produce items with the lowest amount of pesticides.

8. What are the health benefits of astragalus?

Astragalus is an herb that has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to stimulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.  Known for its high polysaccharide and flavonoid content, the root of astragalus contains many active plant compounds associated with its immunomodulating, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.
